Dr. Martha Herbert is a pediatric neurologist, neuroscientist, systems thinker and writer. She earned her medical degree at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and then trained in Pediatrics at Cornell-New York Hospital and in Neurology, Child Neurology and neurodevelopmental disorders at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School where as a faculty member she founded the collaborative multidisciplinary TRANSCEND Research Program (Treatment Research and Neuroscience Evaluation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders), based in the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, which takes a whole-body-brain approach to challenged brain development. For eight years (six as vice-chair) she served on the Board of Directors of the Council for Responsible Genetics, the world’s first genetic engineering watchdog group. She presently serves as a special expert on the International Commission on Biological Effects of EMF (ICBE-EMF). Prior to her medical training she obtained a doctoral degree at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying evolution and development of learning processes in biology and culture in the History of Consciousness program, and then did postdoctoral work in the philosophy and history of science. Her background in pediatric neurology, evolutionary biology, environmental studies, social theory and history of science has oriented her toward systems biology, brain connectivity and dynamism, and brain-body-planet interrelationships. For Dr. Herbert, these interests interweave with and are in part inspired by her decades of direct experience with and training in a wide range of mind-brain-body-movement-somato-emotional practice modalities. She is presently a Visiting Professor at Life University in its CHARLI program (Complementary Health Advanced Research and Leadership Institute).
Dr. Herbert is committed to looking at the brain, medicine and chronic illness in a whole body-brain-planet perspective, and to expand options for increasing systems integrity. To this end, she founded the Higher Synthesis Foundation (HSF), whose mission is to document, study and inspire successful regenerative approaches to complex health and environmental problems, particularly those that fall under the umbrella of its “Gifted Clinicians, Transformative Treatments, Sensitive Measures” Project. HSF has facilitated research and data capture through mentorship of independent innovative research and provision of cloud-based research infrastructure support.
Dr. Herbert’s research interests as a child neurologist and neuroscientist started with a focus on brain aspects of autism and neurodevelopmental disorders, and expanded through examination of physiological, environmental, environmental-genomic and neuroplasticity dimensions, and evolved to viewing them and various other chronic brain conditions as “dynamic encephalopathies” (that can change) rather than taking for granted the unproven assumption that they are “static encephalopathies” (i.e., fixed for life). This involves looking at how environmental exposures and vulnerability affect brain and body health and function all the way from preconception to the end of the lifespan, rather than simply locking in fixed diagnoses before birth – and about how reducing environmental stressors and increasing supports can help expand potential, often greatly. Improving “environment” is not just physical; it can also involve transforming how we raise our children, support their learning processes and address their challenges. To this end, Dr. Herbert served for a number of years as Scientific Director and Chair of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of the Documenting Hope Project and Principal Investigator of its CHIRP™ survey study and its FLIGHT™ intervention study but left because of major concerns and differences. Plasticity and recovery nevertheless remain amongst her major scientific and theoretical priorities. She recently joined the Medical Advisory Team at HealingALS.org. She is the author of the public-oriented Harvard Health Publications book, The Autism Revolution: Whole Body Strategies for Making Life All It Can Be, as well as many scientific papers.
Dr. Herbert left the northeast in 2022 and now lives in rural Tennessee where she is engaged with farmers and others in on-the-ground farm and community activities while she also participates virtually in a variety of brain, health and healing projects and studies with colleagues around the world. She has been deeply impressed with the children and adolescents here regarding regarding how heatlhy, agile and well-functioning they are — and what it is like to grow up in nature and live in genuine community.
